Interproximal reduction (IPR) and attachments are two of the most common chairside steps in aligner treatment. At bitesoft, our orthodontic team will tell you exactly when and where these are required in each case plan.
Interproximal Reduction (IPR)
What it is: Gentle polishing between teeth to create small amounts of space (measured in fractions of a millimeter).
Purpose:
-
To relieve crowding without extractions
-
To balance arch proportions for better bite fit
-
To help improve long-term stability of results
Our protocol:
-
IPR is conservative and minimal usually 0.1–0.3mm per contact.
-
Always performed according to the orthodontist’s digital treatment plan.
-
We’ll provide a clear chart with exact teeth and amounts at each stage.
-
If you’re new to IPR, training resources and video guides are available through the bitesoft Hub and webinars.
Attachments
What they are: Small, tooth-coloured composite bumps bonded to teeth, designed to give aligners grip.
Purpose:
-
Help aligners rotate, extrude, or intrude specific teeth
-
Improve root control for more predictable movement
-
Support complex but still mild–moderate movements
Our protocol:
-
Attachments are included only when needed.
-
Template guides are provided with each case, showing shape and position.
-
Clear instructions are included for bonding and removal at the end of treatment.
Key Point
Both IPR and attachments are planned by the orthodontic team and built into each case. You'll always receive precise, case-specific instructions.
